14 Hours With The Roosevelts

I’m a bit of a documentary nerd. Particularly biographical, historical and social documentaries. When I Netflix binge, it’s not old TV’s shows. It’s Ken Burns PBS specials.

My most recent binge, a 14 hour documentary series on Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. It was amazing. Fourteen hours well spent.

One of the reasons I love reading biographies is because, to me, it’s the equivalent of having a virtual mentor. Reading about successful people, learning about how they live (or lived), teaches me a ton about what it takes for me to succeed in my own life and business. Watching biographical documentaries is the same.

You can learn A LOT by studying the Roosevelt’s! Three absolutely amazing, inspiring people who changed the world they lived in.

As I watched, there was one particular quote that stuck with me.

“It takes as much energy to wish it, as it does to plan.” Eleanor Roosevelt

Think about that.

We’ve all got dreams. Goals. Things we want to do. Places we want to go. Accomplishments we want to achieve. We also all have the same 24 hours each day in which to do our best to bring these things to pass.

That’s where many fail. By exerting all their energy wishing, rather than planning.

I’m inspired. Are you inspired?

What are you going to plan today?

5 Reasons You Need To Start Journaling

New Year’s Resolutions aren’t really my thing. I’m more of a goals guy. I suppose some might think the two are interchangeable. Perhaps, to a degree, that may be true. I guess I just see goals as being much more involved. More thought out. Better planned. Resolutions often seem too general. A happy thought, tossed into the ether on a whim.

If I’m going to accomplish anything, I need a plan. Hence, goals.

My New Years Resolution

journal-writingHowever, this year, for the fun of it, I decided to make a New Year’s Resolution. Something I wanted to pursue throughout the year that was good for me. Just not necessarily something involved enough to be a full-fledged goal.

For years I’ve read about the benefits of journaling. It’s a habit all the great entrepreneurs and most successful people practice daily. Being a great entrepreneur is a goal of mine. However, I’ve never been able to commit myself to journaling.

Until 2016.

That’s my resolution. To journal.

Here we are, two weeks into the new year. I’ve been journaling, (at the time of this blog) for exactly 14 days. I’m hooked. Entirely. In actuality, I’ve been questioning myself as to why I didn’t start doing this sooner! Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20.

Even in the short time since I began, I’ve already seen several incredible benefits which will now motivate me to keep this up throughout the year.

5 Reasons You Need To Start Journaling

1) Downloading My Thoughts: As someone who has insomniac tendencies, there’s nothing more frustrating than laying in bed at night, desperately wanting to be asleep, but instead, processing what seems to be an endless string of thoughts and ideas. Journaling seems to have solved this. Taking a few minutes to jot down what’s in my head before turning in for the night has resulted in some of the best sleep I’ve had in months!

2) Personal Accountability: One of the most vital pieces of the puzzle when it comes to accomplishing your goals is accountability. By writing down my daily activity, I’ve inadvertently created a new layer of accountability in my life. My journal tracks my progress.

3) Attitude Check: At the end of each day, one of the things I journal is my accomplishments. I document each blessing. Be it a booked voice over, a new client, a new opportunity or anything else worth celebrating. Ending my day this way, on a positive and reflective note, has also turned into a better start each morning. That was an unexpected side affect that’s kept me smiling for two weeks!

4) Creative Wellspring: Although the original intent of my journal was to simply document what I’ve been doing, it’s turned into something more. A launching pad for what’s to come! By reflecting on each days efforts and celebrating the successes, another surprise benefit has been how this act, has inspired me to new ideas. Writing down what’s working has sparked my mind to even more things to try.

5) Boosted Self Confidence: By the very practice of writing down what I’ve accomplished on a given day, I’m re-enforcing for myself my ability to do what I do for a living. Whether it’s a booked voice over, a successful coaching session or selling a course. My confidence is higher in the two weeks since I began journaling than it’s been in the two months prior to getting started.

January 1, I never would’ve guessed I’d see any of these benefits. Even if I had considered it as plausible, I certainly never would’ve believed it would happen so fast!

Now I understand why all the most successful people journal. If I’m enjoying these five unexpected benefits in just two weeks, I can’t wait to see how I feel after a couple months!

7 Reasons You Need To Set Goals

Tis the season for turkey dinners, giving gifts, listening to Bing Crosby, watching Chevy Chase and wishing friends, family and strangers Happy Holidays and (soon) Merry Christmas.

It’s also the season for setting goals. If you want to set yourself up for an amazing 2016, you need to start thinking, dreaming and setting!

7 Reasons You Need To Set Goals

1) Clarity: What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Is it a specific annual income? A certain status level within the industry? Do you want to work with particular clients? Master a niche or genre? Setting goals can help you gain clarity on what your end game is. That, in turn, can help you make a plan to get there.

2) Focus: Once you know exactly what it is you’re wanting to accomplish, setting goals can help you laser focus. You can stop devoting time and energy to unproductive tasks that you’ve identified irrelevant. You can commit to learning and growing in the areas that will get you where you want to be.

3) Plan: You don’t set out for a destination without some kind of plan for how you’ll get there. If you’re driving, maybe you have a map or GPS. It’s no different in your voice over business. Once you know where you’re going, you need a plan for how you’ll get there. Once you set your goals, start breaking them down into practical, tangible steps that will take you from point A to point B.

4) Momentum: You know what you want. Your efforts are focused. You have a plan to get there. Now, you need momentum. That’s what goals give you. As you take the small steps and cross them off your list, you begin to see your goal coming closer within your reach. That builds momentum that keeps driving you forward.

5) Accountability: One of the challenges of being self-employed and working from home (as most voice actors do) is staying accountable to getting the work done. Particularly the projects and tasks that may be less than desirable. You know, things like cold-calling or web updates or bookwork, to name a few. Next thing you know, we’re wrapped up in housework, kids, friends, family, errands, Netflix and countless other distractions. Goals help keep you accountable. They help keep you on task. Ensuring the right work is getting done.

6) Potential: It’s in you. More than you may think or realize. A few years ago, when I started doing voice over full-time, I didn’t fully grasp the potential I had in this business. Now here I am, earning a fantastic income and creating my dream lifestyle. Not only that, but I get to serve others as a coach and mentor, helping them achieve their voice over dreams. Setting the right goals, and following through on them will help you unlock your limitless potential!

7) Winning: What it all boils down to in the end is this… goals will lead you to your best life. In the past couple years, I’ve accomplished and experienced things I never would’ve dreamed of, even 5 years ago. I simply never thought it was all possible. Looking back, I can clearly see it wouldn’t have been if I hadn’t set goals. They’re the game changer.

Run Your Own Race

This last two weeks have been very interesting ones in our industry. A time of great conversations, a few heated debates and a little controversy, courtesy of the practices of a particular Pay To Play casting site.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to rehash all of that today. Although, if you’re interested in getting caught up, read My Thoughts on Pay To Play Casting Sites.

Instead, I want to share with you a few of the conversations I’ve had since this all started and offer an entirely different perspective on the matter at hand.

A Few Conversations I’ve Had This Week

With…

…an influential voice talent and coach who has facilitated some great discussion (and debate) on the subject of casting sites in general. Together we discussed the issue and how to keep the conversations constructive and educational.

…an industry leader and talent about educational opportunities. Teaching and empowering voice actors to market their own business.

…a voice talent that has created a system to use the P2P’s to her advantage to find new opportunities and book new work.

…several voice actors who, in frustration, canceled their casting site memberships as a way of vocalizing their distrust in the new methods being adopted by certain sites.

…a voice talent who feels like they’re looked down upon by their peers because they use casting sites, even though they’re finding great success with them.

…a voice actor who has never used P2P’s and simply couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

…several voice actors who want to escape the Pay To Play sites and, as such, have requested to do some one on one coaching with me to help them develop their marketing skills and efforts.

Run Your Own Race

choose-your-own-pathWhat I loved about every one of these conversations is this… each person I spoke with was in an entirely different place from the others. Each one was working on their own business, doing their own thing, finding their own path, and doing it in a way that worked for them.

Awesome!

Regardless of what’s going on with this casting site or that casting site, here’s what matters most… run your own race!

My race doesn’t involve paid memberships on casting sites. Maybe yours does. Maybe that’s working great for you. Or maybe you’re union. Or you have a dozen agents. Or you make 40 cold calls a day. Maybe you’re a teacher or coach helping new talent find their way. Maybe you’ve been in the voice over industry so long and you’re so well established that you simply laugh at people who engage in these current debates.

All that matters is you run your own race.

Figure out what works best for you and your business and go with it. Don’t worry about what everybody else says to do or not do. What works and doesn’t work. What’s right and what’s wrong.

Educate yourself, for sure. Find a coach. A mentor. Take a class. Read. Learn. Grow.

Then run your own race.

A Roadblock To Success

I get it. Jumping into voice over with both feet is hard. Scary. Intimidating. Hey, it took me years before I made the plunge. Even then, I didn’t jump in so much as I was pushed. Forcefully. Without warning.

In the few years that have passed since I made the commitment to pursuing my voice over career full-time, there’s one lesson I’ve learned.

You can’t have full-time success with part-time commitment. Click to Tweet

Almost daily I hear from people who are “trying to break in.” They’re spending a half hour here, an hour there, in between their day job, their favourite TV show and kids baseball practice. They’re submitting a few auditions a day, or maybe a week, and wondering where the riches, fame and glory are.

A Roadblock To Success

You can’t have full-time success with part-time commitment.

Not everybody can dive in. Like I said, I get it. But as with any other endeavour in life, you get out what you put in. If you’re only putting in a few hours here and there and expecting your career to take off, I’m telling you right now, don’t hold your breath.

Entreprenuership is not for the faint of heart. If you really want to make the magic happen… get your hands dirty. Make no mistake about it, if you’re going to be a full-time voice talent, you better be ready to be an entrepreneur!

If you want it bad enough, you’ll sacrifice for it. It’s the only way to breakthrough this roadblock to success.
