Why You Need To Set Ridiculous Goals

The first time I set the goal to earn $100,000 in a year, it was about as ridiculous as it gets. It was more than twice the best annual salary I had ever earned in radio (or my life for that matter). I couldn’t even fathom what $100,000 in a single year would be like. Not only had I never earned that kind of coin, nobody in my family had either.

Still, there was something deep inside of me that said, “go for it!” After all, what did I have to lose? A great big, seemingly impossible, ridiculous goal seemed like just what I needed to motivate myself to go to a new level.

In 2014, I came so close. So close!!! Even now, a year later, I still can’t believe it.

If I had never set that great big, ridiculous goal, I promise you, I never would’ve come close to it. In fact, I’d be willing to bet money I would’ve remained stuck in the $30,000 – $40,000 range I was in during my radio days.

Without thinking about breaking through that barrier, without believing it was possible, it never would’ve happened.

Set Some Ridiculous Goals

Do yourself a favour for 2016. Set a couple of ridiculous goals.

If you’ve never earned more than $20,000 a year, set a goal to earn $50,000!

If you’ve always dreamed about going to a conference to improve your skills, but have never followed through, make it happen in 2016.

If working with a big name VO coach is something you know could push you to new heights but you’ve been too afraid to make the investment, take a leap of faith and book that session.

Nothing To Lose; Everything To Gain

Think about some things that really excite, but seem impossible. Unattainable. Then set the goal and go for it! You’ve got nothing to lose and life changing results to gain!

When I look back over all that I’ve accomplished personally and professional in the past couple of years, I can say with full confidence that none of those things would’ve happened if they hadn’t started by setting a goal, writing it down, and making a plan to see it through.

The ridiculous goals, they’re the ones that’ve resulted in my biggest accomplishments!
