Yesterday I came across an article via Twitter from Ranker.com titled, “Fun Jobs that Pay Well.” The criteria was quite simple, the job must pay at least $40,000 annually.
Voice Over ranked 1st.
According to the article description, “List of fun jobs that pay well, these cool, high-paying jobs are technically “work,” but the people who do them on a daily basis generally enjoy their time.”
Voice Over: Fun Job that Pays Well
I shared this article on my Facebook page and reshared it in a voice over group on Facebook. The comments that resulted were interesting, to the say the least. Some VO’s laughed over the $80,000 annual salary claim. Some joked about the ease of the job. Some took the article more personal than others.
So what do I think? I think voice over actually is a fun job that pays well.
But don’t mistake fun for easy. That is, perhaps, one of the most common misconceptions about the voice over business. That it’s easy.
Don’t Mistake Fun For Easy
I’ve been doing voice over for 19 years. Full-time for 3. I can tell you right now, doing this full-time is not easy. Contrary to popular belief… it’s more than just talking.
I know. Shocking right?
You see, it’s also…
- Marketing
- Web Development
- Production
- Writing
- Editing
- Sales
- Social Media
- Accounting
- Promotions
- Customer Service
- Human Resources
- And probably about a hundred other things that I’m missing…
It’s fun, for sure. And you really can make a great living. Not as much as an astronaut, according to Ranker.com. So keep that in mind as you plan your future.
Just don’t quit your day job if you think fun equates to easy.
