Taking Time To Do Nothing

To Do - NothingHow much time did you spend doing nothing today?

Absolutely nothing?

I don’t mean how much time did you spend doing stuff other than work. I’m talking about time spent free of any task or distraction.

Time spent doing nothing.

When I lay my head on the pillow at night one of two things happen. Either I sleep or I think. When I think, it’s hard. I’m talking about ideas flowing like a raging river. They crash around in my mind like waves beating against the shore.

This is what I’ve figured out about these two scenarios. The days I sleep are the days I set some time aside to do absolutely nothing for a while. Ten minutes. Maybe twenty. Maybe even a full hour. In that time, time spent without my iPhone or a TV or Twitter, I process all the information I’ve taken in during the day. In those times of solitude ideas flow.

I’m creative.

The days I don’t sleep at night are the days I didn’t take some time to process, to think. When my head hits the pillow it’s the first moment of solitude I’ve had all day. The floodgates open.

I’m creative.

When you make your living doing voice work creativity is a big part of the picture. One day you’re reading a script for a phone system, then next day you’re selling a product in a direct response ad, and the day after that you might be recording an instructional video.

Different hats. Different deliveries. Different creative approaches.

Let me ask you again… how much time did you take today to do nothing?

If you haven’t done it yet, you may want to reconsider. Let the creative energy flow!

What do you do to get the creative juices flowing?
