Voice Over Rates Roundtable

Mention the word “rates” in a group of voice actors and you’re sure to get a pretty heated debate going. The opinions cover the spectrum, and few things can get people fired up as much as the subject of money. Particularly when it comes to getting paid!

For both sides of the table. Educating talent on their own worth, and educating clients on fair market value for voice over work.

Recently, a group of industry heavyweights gathered to for a very enlightening, intelligent, and productive conversation on the subject of voice over rates. I’d strongly encourage you to find some time to sit down and watch it.

Special thank to Dave Courvoisier, Anne Ganguzza, Paul Strikwerda, Jeffrey Umberger, Cristina Milizia, John Coleman, Matt Cowlrick, Mary Lynn Wissner and, of course, World-Voices, for putting this roundtable together.

In this weeks tip I talk about an offer that we’ve all no doubt received at some point in our voice over careers. The amazing opportunity that promises great exposure… but pays nothing. Is it worth it? Do we accept the offer?

Would You Rather…

Would you rather…

Do five voice over jobs for $50?

or…

Do one voice over job for $250?

Some of you are going to say, “what’s the difference?” I hear you. $250 is $250, isn’t it? In some senses, I suppose, yes. It is. That is, of course, provided you’re only looking at the work from a financial perspective.

What about a time perspective?

How long will it take you to do those five jobs?

How long will it take you do that one job?

How much is your time worth?

Here’s an even better question. The one I ask myself. How much is your freedom worth?

It’s Not Just About Money

freedomAfter all, if you’re not sitting in the studio recording those five jobs, what else could you doing? Marketing? Auditioning? Relaxing? Spending time with family? Eating hot dogs? Pretty much anything your heart desires because it’s your free time to do with as you please?!

Here’s the thing… working on the cheap, that is, discounting your rates, which can be oh so tempting when you’re desperately looking for work, comes with consequences that go far beyond undervaluing your services on a financial level.

It also runs the risk of taking away the freedom and flexibility that can come from the entrepreneurial lifestyle. It becomes an unforgiving consumer of your time because you have to put in more hours, working on more projects to earn the same amount of money you could make from doing one job at the rate you should be charging.

Know what I mean?

It’s just another perspective to consider before you undercut a rate next time.
