The Other Golden Rule Of Voice Over

Everybody knows the Golden Rule.

Do unto others as you would have then do unto you.

Whether you’re a Christian, believe in God, or have Jesus as your homeboy, everybody knows the Golden Rule and you don’t need to be religious in any capacity to know it’s great advice!

It works in every aspect of your life. Your personal relationships. Your work relationships. Your voice over client relationships.

Business 101. Life 101. Voice over 101.

The Other Golden Rule

the-golden-ruleCan there be two Golden Rules? Or does one have to be the Silver Rule?

I’ll let you debate that amongst yourselves, but I’m going to share with you what I believe is the second most important rule for your voice over business.

Do what you say you’ll do.

Honestly, this should be one of those rules that doesn’t need to be spoken. But it does. It should be common sense. But, shockingly, for some it isn’t.

Do What You Say You’ll Do

  • If you say you’ll deliver for a certain budget… do it!
  • if you say you’ll deliver by a certain date… do it!
  • If you say you’ll agree to certain terms… stick to them!
  • If you promise a certain number of pickups… give them!
  • If you advertise certain hours… work them!
  • If you make any commitment at all to your client… follow through!

I am stunned when a client tells me the reason they love me so much is because I do what I say I’ll do. I assumed that it was common practice. Apparently it’s not. That’s great for me, I suppose. It means I get more work. But honestly, if that’s all it takes to make my clients happy, then it doesn’t say much about some of my competition.

So write it down. Set it as your screen saver. Tape it to your bathroom mirror. Use a magnet to stick it to your fridge. Never forget the OTHER Golden Rule… or the Silver Rule…

Do what you say you’ll do!
