A Lesson Learned From Brian Williams

As a firefighter, I’ve found myself in many intense situations over the last 15 years. Situations where I’ve had to make split second decisions. Situations where great risks were taken. Situations that most people run away from. So when I heard the Brian Williams story originally, I understood because, in some ways, I’d be there.

Now that it’s come to light that the story was embellished, in some ways, I still understand. Williams has spoke of “foggy memory”, which many have cast aside as an excuse. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. Regardless, I get it. I’ve got foggy memories from certain calls I’ve been involved with.

That doesn’t make me a liar. It makes me a human who, in the midst of an intense situation, got some details confused. Unless you’ve been there, you likely won’t understand.

All of this, to be clear, is not a defence for or of Brian Williams. Nor will I stand on the sidelines and cast stones at this man who has done his job well for many years. Delivering news and stories that have impacted all our lives.

A Lesson Learned From Brian Williams

However, it did get me thinking about one of the most valuable elements of ourselves and our businesses that we must fiercely guard and protect.

Integrity.

When all is said and done, I don’t particularly care to be remembered for all the voice overs I booked. Compared to others by the number of big name clients on my resume. Or valued by the blogs I’ve written or videos I’ve produced.

Rather, I wish to be remembered as a man who lived his life and conducted his business with great integrity.

To me, that’s the most important thing.
