Just Take A Single Step

Have you ever reached a point in your life where you were quite certain it wasn’t possible to sink any lower?

Have you ever experienced a moment in your career where, beyond any and all shadow of a doubt, it was time to let your dream die?

Have you ever looked up? Just simply looked up because you were so far down that there was no other direction for you to look?

When The Bottom Drops Out

Man-in-pitWI’ve been very blessed in my voice over career since I made the move to full-time. Sure, I’ve had bad days, bad weeks, even a couple bad months. But I’ve always been able to pull through. No matter how bleak, how dark, there was still even the slightest glimmer of light at the end of the seemingly endless tunnel.

Some aren’t so fortunate. Of this I am well aware. It makes me even more grateful for the success I’ve achieved.

Motivational quotes are nice. Self help books sell by the millions. Encouraging words. Pats on the back. Though all well meaning, sometimes, no matter how well intentioned, aren’t worth much of anything at all to the recipient. When hope is lost, words are often not adequate enough.

What Do You Do?

When you’re in that season, and trust me, I know that season very well, what can you do?

My best advice is really nothing profound at all.

Take a single step.

That’s it. Take a single step.

MountainWhen you’re at the bottom and you’ve got to work your way back up to the top, when you’ve got to scale the mountain, climb out of the pit, you will only do it a single step at a time.

I should warn you, sometimes you’ll take that single step forward and slide six steps back. Don’t be discouraged. It happens. It’s part of the process. Part of the experience. Part of your growth. Don’t let it stop you. Overwhelm you. Especially don’t let it defeat you.

Dust off, stand up, and take another single step.

Eventually, you’ll get where you’re going. When you do, you’ll be a better, stronger person for having endured the journey.
