Creating A Voice Over Highlight Reel

Have you ever had a day when you didn’t feel good enough? Or maybe a week? A month? A season?!

I think it’s safe to say that all of us who have been in voice over for more than five minutes have gone through one of those spells. Auditions weren’t turning into bookings. Clients were using different voices. Marketing efforts were turning up blanks.

No matter how hard you try, no matter what steps you take, things just aren’t working. And you start to question if you’re good enough.

Did I make a mistake getting into voice over?

Is it time to quit?

Time to find a new job?

Creating A Voice Over Highlight Reel

you-are-good-enoughSomething I did quite a while ago was create a what I call my voice over highlight reel.

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Just like a pro athlete has a collection of their best games, hits, catches, touchdowns, or whatever it is relevant to their sport, you do the same for your voice over work.

It could contain any combination of:

  • Audio files of your best voice overs.
  • A list of your biggest clients.
  • Produced videos or commercials you’ve voiced.
  • Pictures of your biggest pay cheque.
  • Copies of video games or movies or cartoons you’ve been in.

The point is to put together a collection of all the “stuff” that will remind you, “heck yeah you’re good enough!”

On those days, or weeks or months or seasons when things just aren’t going your way, spend a little time with your voice over highlight reel and reignite the spark that got you started in this business in the first place.
