Computers Can’t Replace Everything

When I first started in radio the station I worked for had a live announcer in the building 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It had to be that way. Somebody needed to push the buttons! The station used CD’s for music, commercials were all on cart and phone calls were recorded and run on reel-to-reel.

Then computers came along.

All of the sudden people weren’t so important anymore. Automated systems ran everything and afforded you the ability to voice track. First the overnight show was eliminated. Then a few weekend shows were cut. Next to go was live evening shows. Suddenly, stations that had a 8 or 10 jocks on staff ran with 3 or 4.

For all the things that computers can do, and for all the people that computers have replaced, there’s still a few things man can and (hopefully) always will do better.

I don’t know what the thought process was here. Maybe they didn’t have time to hire a professional voice talent? Maybe money was an issue? Or maybe it never even crossed their mind to have this Real Estate Virtual Tour produced with a professional voiceover?

I would have been happy to voice this project for them.

This is a virtual tour I recently voiced for Chris Jagt. It sounds a little more natural (though my opinion may be biased)

Thinking about using a computer voice for your next project? Before you travel that road, why don’t we have a conversation? I might be able to help you. marc@marcscottonline.com
