Angry? Upset? Frustrated? Don’t Make This Mistake.

Venting Frustration OnlineYou didn’t get the job.

The client changed their mind at the last minute.

You tanked an audition and you know it.

You’re dealing with a dry spell.

The bank account doesn’t lie. You’re not making enough money.

Your computer locked up before you hit save.

One of your pieces of equipment just died.

Stuff Happens

When you’re a professional voice talent, there’s probably about a thousand different things that can lead to a bad day. Or a bad week. Or a bad month! If I took a survey, I know I could fill pages with all the things that set us off, cause frustration and make us want to scream or cry or quit.

We’ve all been through it. Such is the joy of being an entrepreneur. The buck stops with you. Which means when things are going bad you can’t just pass them up the food chain or off to someone else. You’ve got to sort it out, push through it, and get yourself back on track.

Don’t Make This Mistake

Here’s one of the biggest mistakes I see voice talents make when things aren’t going their way. They don’t unplug.

The absolute worst thing you can do is take your frustrations online. No matter how good it feels in the moment, venting your frustrations on Facebook or Twitter is NEVER the answer. Do you know who browses your social media? Your current clients and your potential clients. Trust me when I tell you, nobody wants to work with someone who has a bad attitude.

No matter how good it feels in the moment, venting your frustrations on Facebook or Twitter is NEVER the answer.

You may feel justified. I’m not arguing that when bad things happens we get upset. I’m just warning you that social media isn’t the place to release them.

In addition to this, you never want to send an email or a text message and you never want to take or make a phone call when you’re frustrated or upset. I can almost guarantee you’ll end up regretting something, or everything, you say.

This applies both professionally and personally.

What To Do When The Going Gets Tough

When the crap hits the fan, so to speak, one of the best things you can do for yourself is unplug for a while. It might take five minutes, it make take an hour, it might take a day. Just unplug!

…one of the best things you can do for yourself is unplug for a while.

Take some deep breaths. Change your environment. Hit the gym. Do what you’ve got to do, just make sure you unplug for a while. Put your phone down. Turn your computer off. Release the bad energy and regroup.

Once you’ve had a chance to cool down, get your had back in the game and focus forward!
